Bye bye 2017, and Hello 2018

What an eventful year !
So quickly and silently has come to an end:
So many new beginnings,
Maybe more in one year than in all my life put together.
As someone said,
It was the "right time".

If we could just catch all the "right" times
At the right time,
I think life would work out just fine.
But elusive they are,the "right" times
If you are not looking,
If you are too "busy"
And everything is going well - usually.

Savour each moment.
Savour time.
That's what life is really made of--
Moments.
Try and catch the magic in each--
Just imagine that -
Its like Balu, the bear with the honey comb.

But that's what each moment
Could be.
Breathe it in
Listen. Expect. Wait
Ask, knock - whatever
And you will find --
The pot of gold,
Is the magic in the moment !

Happy New Year everyone !

Breathe in.

                                                                  Light on the ground.
Acrylic on canvas. 8 x 12 inches.

Or should it be shadows on the ground ?  Either way, I thought it looked beautiful when I sat on a stone bench under this canopy of green ( which are leaves of Badam trees ), hidden from the scorching sun and had a moment to enjoy the breeze and look at the sun dappled earth under it.

Maybe you can breathe it in too ! :)

Kanagambaram

An ordinary flower.
One that used to be so common in my younger days
-- when I wore my hair in braids
And went to school with flowers in my hair
-- Because - everybody did !

Before the short hair -- much before
But also before flowers in my hair
Became "unfashionable"
Somewhere along the way.

But recently, I came upon a single plant
With just a few flowers
(Used to be cheaper than jasmine those days!)
--Reminding me of times long gone.

I looked it up now, and found it is called Crossandra. Which I didn't know all these years. Well - we learn something new everyday.

Flowers and more flowers -- bring happy thoughts !

How nature smiles --

She smiles in the flowers
In their many colours,
She smiles in the trees
In their verdant greens,
She smiles in the blues
Of the rolling waves,
She smiles in the breeze
Which touches my face.

She smiles in the passion
We bring to each day,
She smiles at the new things
We think and feel,
The happy thoughts
And colours
Are a little mixed up---
Is it in my head or on the canvas !!!

And that is certainly, a happy place to be !!

When real became too real for me !

I just realised that --- I prefer having something a little more--- or less-- than real -- but only after I had done these three rather real paintings :)

Who is this in a new red dress ? :)

Who is this in a new red dress ? Answer: The old bougainvilla tree.

It is old and gnarled, has straggly branches and has some flowers through out the year, but not too many, of the usual magenta colour. But come March, the leaves seem to fade into the background and the tree is just a riot of colour - reds, burnt orange, and some magenta too, and so many shades in between.

----- And somehow, as we go about our daily work immersed in our own problems, can you believe that we pass this by without a second look ???

So -- my thought for the day is --- look -- you may see something new. :)

A letter to my younger self - just thoughts without a painting !

A letter to my younger self :

Listen to your heart
Don’t let the clamour of do-s and don’t -s overwhelm you
Be yourself; You know yourself best of all
Better than society at large definitely
Better than many good intentioned loved ones,
Family and friends, both.
Better than your peers, and your competitors too.
Just reach deep within and find your inner strength.

Trust yourself
Take time to ponder, to dream
Dream of things which seem impossible
Dream of what tugs on your heartstrings, gentle though it be
Take time to love
Take time to try things and find out what you love
And don’t you stop till you do.
When you find it, the best part of your journey begins.

Follow your dream, dear heart
For you answer more to yourself
When all is said and done,
Than all the other voices, demanding though they be:
Did you do what you were meant to do
In all the days that were granted you?
If you did, then perhaps, among all your struggles
I hope you found your treasure – a filling of your soul.

Painting fish :)

It is always a pleasure to see the finished painting (-- it was a plain white canvas just some time ago -) - and feel that I can touch the water --- maybe.

It gives me a full heart and my day just became a little bit brighter. Enjoy the day, everyone, and Happy Woman's Day !

Roses in the garden--- "far from the madding crowd".

"It seems to me I'd like to go
Where bells don't ring, nor whistles blow,
Nor clocks don't strike, nor gongs sound,
And I'd have stillness all around.
----
----
Sometimes it seems to me I must
Just quit the city's din and dust,
And get out where the sky is blue,
And say, now, how does it seem to you?"
Far From The Madding Crowd - by Nixon Waterman
(Full poem at  https://www.scrapbook.com/poems/doc/1587/115.html)
And that about says it all ! But I think I would just like to see the blue sky and stop to smell the roses -- city or not -- its more about a state of mind -- don't you think ?

A Happy Surprise!

Once in a while, I surprise myself. We all do, and if it is a real surprise, it brings a happy high !
Such as --- when you finish a project before the deadline,
or the chicken curry that you made tastes especially good,
or you thought you were late for a meeting, but actually made it on time
or your article really sounds good ---
and so on.
Today, I am left with a painting that is better than expected :)
And --- I am not sure how that happened, really !

Deep thoughts by the ocean !

A lovely day for a beach trip. After a very long time.
Lovely colours.
A relaxed time.
Sometimes the sight and sound just makes you stop to think. And dream. And make decisions, perhaps.
A quiet time for introspection. Away from the buzz of every day life.

Orange sunrise

Sunrises come in infinite shades. This is one of them -- in orange. Another gift from a train journey.

Happy thoughts to you !

A purple thought:
Do thoughts have colours ?
Or do we think in colour ??
Anyway, I think that some thoughts have colours -- and this purple thought is a happy one and also has lots of pink and some flowers which makes me feel carefree and a gives me a feeling of floating away -- into this picture!!

New colours

Trying out my new Winsor & Newton watercolours!
I think sometimes we take so much for granted --
Like colours
The world is full of colour
And we can see it
Bright colours
Subtle colours
All kinds of colours
I will look more closely today
At the colours in my world today.

A lotus and lily collection !

I can't seem to get enough of waterlily leaves and the flowers and similar watery works !

I didn't think this one would take so long, but it did. And I don't know if it looks as good for the time I spent on it.

Morning glory

A painting that is long overdue.

This is how the fence looks as I park my car and go to work everyday, and once in a while I stop to look and take a quick pic on my phone.

Now I find I have a rather large number of phone pics of the fence !!

And at last, I have a painting.
